General Mental Health/substance abuse Counseling Program

The General Mental Health Counseling Program is a mobile counseling service; it consists of a thorough intake session to identify issues, needs and problematic behaviors. From this assessment a treatment plan is constructed that identifies goals and objectives. The therapy is a brief, cognitive/behavioral, solution based approach. The number of sessions provided depends on the source of the referral.

Agency program utilizes a cognitive approach to therapeutic intervention. As a result the treatment strategy addresses each client’s patterns of thinking. All Counselors are trained thru continuing education seminars, classes, tapes, & videos to recognize the way in which cultural diversity affects these patterns of thinking and is able to adapt the intervention to minority youth.

Clients are assigned to a professional who is skilled in the area of cultural diversity. If treatment has started and the client and/or counselor feel any stress or inability to work together, the program director will discuss the reasons with the client and counselor. At that time, the program director will reevaluate the case and will discuss with other appropriate professionals a suitable resolution. The outcome will be dependent on all parties involved input.

The agency utilizes minority professionals and the Program Director discusses with them any issues regarding minority youth. Also the Program Director is familiar with probation officers, administrators, and other professionals from all types of cultural backgrounds. Information is available and solicited, from sources such as the internet. Agency policy dictates an annual training to address the need for continued awareness of cultural diverse needs.

Each year staff is mandated to participate in training regarding cultural diversity. In addition, each professional is required to complete courses in their academic discipline regarding cultural diversity. In these classes the student is taught, through systems theory, the concept of the dual perspective. This is a professional tool utilized to assess the level of acculturation and assimilation.

Family members are encouraged to participate unless probation officer or case manager specifically request individual sessions. Group therapy techniques are utilized to engage family members to identify problem areas and changes each feels needs to be addressed. Family values are explored and unity is promoted. The parental bond is assessed and strengthened, if deemed necessary. Dysfunctional patterns of relating are identified and individual thought processes are examined. Objective is to teach each member healthy thinking patterns that will reduce problematic behaviors.

Family members are provided information regarding community resources available to assist them with their needs. The agency has a roster of counselors that specialize in different areas of human services. They contact the program director for information that can assist them further in the welfare of each family.

Counselors identify and assess the involvement of family members by observation and participation level at each family session Individual clients and their family members are instructed and strongly urged to contact this agency for further support and referral services.
