Therapist
Mary Jennifer Friend MEd
I have been honored to walk alongside individuals in their healing journeys for multiple years. I hold a Master’s degree from the University of Phoenix, and much of my work has been rooted in the educational setting, where the classroom became my greatest teacher. It was there that I learned the importance of meeting people exactly where they are and listening with an empathetic heart. I believe true healing begins with understanding, and only then can we work toward meaningful solutions.
Through my experience, I have witnessed how deeply trauma—whether personal, generational, or recent—can shape a person’s life. As Gabor Maté so powerfully states, “Trauma is not what happens to you, it’s what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.”
As a counselor, I guide individuals in creating a roadmap for moving forward when past experiences feel like obstacles. My interventions are designed to gently shift cognitive and behavioral patterns so clients can respond to present circumstances as they are, rather than through the lens of past pain. This process supports healthier functioning, greater resilience, and an increased sense of well-being.
My approach integrates sustainable practices that have supported individuals living with trauma, anxiety, depression, and addiction. I draw from evidence-based and holistic modalities, including Talk Therapy, Attachment Therapy, Art Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Meditation, Relapse Prevention, Breathing Techniques, and other mindfulness practices—all aimed at fostering healing, balance, and joy.
I hold close the words of Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries: “How can we move from being separate and superior to connected and compassionate? How then can we together be accountable and place one’s fears in the cradle of loving kindness? All of us finding our true selves in a community of tenderness, all of us essential allies to each other. We find our fundamental identity in each other, each one of us the REAL DEAL and there are no exceptions to that. Do not forget who you are.”
These words reflect my belief that each of us is worthy of compassion, connection, and healing—and that together, in community, we can rediscover our truest selves.
